Twelve bottles of Hermitage La Chapelle wine by Paul Jaboulet Ainè recently sold for £123,750 ($250,025) at a Christie’s International auction in London, doubling the top estimate and setting a European record for a case of wine.
The buyer of the 1961 vintage was an anonymous UK wine merchant, Christie’s said in a statement. Before commission, Christie’s had valued the lot at £40,000 to £50,000.
No case of wine from France’s Rhone Valley region has ever sold for as much before, according to Christie’s. The case of 1961 Hermitage La Chapelle also surpassed the record for a case of Burgundy wine, “illustrating the continued ascent of Rhone in the international wine markets,” Christie’s said in the statement.
A second case of the Hermitage wine, of the same vintage, fetched £112,500 at the same sale.
Paul Jaboulet Ainè wines are represented in Malta by Wands Limited, a subsidiary company of The Farsons Group of Companies.
