National Pina Colada Day is observed annually across the globe on July 10th. For the first time in history Malta joined in the celebrations with events organised in various clubs and bars around the island making it a fun experience for patrons.
The Pina Colada is a sweet, rum-based cocktail which, apart from rum, includes cream of coconut and pineapple juice and is usually served blended or shaken with ice.
Pina Colada literally means ‘strained pineapple’, a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice originally used in the drink when it was created in the Caribbean.
There are different claims to the actual invention of the Pina Colada; the most credible perhaps being the claim by Ramón "Monchito" Marrero Pérez to have first made it at the Caribe Hilton Hotel's Beachcomber Bar in San Juan in 1954. The truth is that pineapple and rum have been together from the beginning of the distillation of rum. Nowadays, the Pina Colada is often made with Malibu, a Caribbean rum with coconut flavour.
Malibu is imported, marketed and distributed by Farsons Beverage Imports Company (FBIC) Limited.
